iPhone 12 Rumors: What We Know So Far

Posted on

It hasn’t been that long since Apple released its iPhone 11 models, but rumors and speculations are already heating up about the next line of phones presumed to be named iPhone 12. Since the iPhone 11 launch was last September, we can predict the next launch will be around the same time. However, there may be an earlier launch coming up for another long-awaited sequel phone to the iPhone SE.

So, what can we expect from Apple’s 2020 models? Here is what we can share so far:

Screen Size: Currently, the iPhone 11 Pro has the smallest screen measuring 5.8 inches and the Pro Max has the largest screen at 6.5 inches. If the iPhone 12s also have similar names (iPhone 12, Pro and Pro Max), there’s speculation that the iPhone 12 would have a smaller screen at 5.4 inches and the iPhone 12 Pro Max a larger screen at 6.7 inches. All new iPhone 12s would also have OLED displays.

Five New iPhones in 2020…: According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will release four new iPhone 12 models, including one 5.4 inch, two 6.1 inch and one 6.7 inch phones. Kuo believes the current 5.8 inch size of the iPhone 11 will go away, so the new 5.4 inch size and one of the 6.1 inch models would be considered lower-end iPhone 12 devices while the more expensive models will be the other 6.1 inch (iPhone 12 Pro) and new 6.7 inch (iPhone Pro Max).

…Including the iPhone SE 2: The fifth phone would be a sequel to the iPhone SE, which is rumored to look more like the iPhone 8. This smaller model would be considered the first “lower cost” phone since 2016 when the iPhone SE came out. It’s reported that Apple started production in February and they may unveil the new SE sometime this month during their annual spring update event.

Appearance: The iPhone 12 may look very similar to the iPhone 11 in terms of shape and camera layout. The only difference is the phones may be thinner (7.40mm compared to iPhone 11 8.1mm and 11 Pro 8.3mm), which comes from a report by Japanese publication Mac Otakara

Color: Similar to Apple introducing a new midnight green color to the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, we may see another new color added to iPhone 12. 2020’s Pantone color of the year is “classic blue” and it’s possible that shade may come into play for the new models.

Camera Update: Since iPhone X, newer iPhones have front-facing cameras with 3D depth sensing. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that some, if not all the iPhone 12s, will have the same 3D depth sensing in their back cameras. This would allow them to 3D map objects from farther away and take camera features like Portrait Mode to the next level.

Touch ID Display: According to MacRumors, Apple might enable fingerprint recognition technology that allows for full-screen touch ID.
USB-C Charging: Since the launch of iPhone 5, Apple has always provided their phones its proprietary lightning port. Now there’s speculation that they may switch to USB-C chargers due to the influence of the European Union. The EU has recently voted in favor of manufacturers to use USB-C to increase customer convenience and decrease waste. If this is passed into law this year, all smartphone makers will have to adopt the same charging standard.

There’s still so much we don’t know (it’s only March after all), but we’re looking forward to seeing what’s in store for Apple’s 2020 phones. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to keep an eye on the upcoming iPhone 12s!
